Chief Medical Officer, OMERS
Dr. Aw is the Chief Medical Officer of OMERS. He provides medical expertise on health and wellness for pension members, employees, portfolio companies and investments in healthcare. He was the former Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Medcan (2004-2019) and maintains an active clinical practice as a senior medical consultant. His interests are in occupational, preventive and travel medicine. Dr. Aw is Part Time Faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA and globally worked with Johns Hopkins Medicine International (2007-2020). He has over 20 years experience in corporate health and occupational medicine including disability management, critical incident planning, infectious diseases in the workplace, industrial hygiene, wellness and disease management programs. He was former Chief Medical Advisor, Scotiabank (11 years) and a senior corporate physician for several large cap companies in the financial, mining, manufacturing, aviation, food and distribution sectors. He has been a regular columnist for the National Post and Huffington Post. Dr. Aw is a member emeritus of the National Corporate Medical Associates of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and also interested in global health initiatives for disadvantaged communities and non-communicable chronic disease prevention programs in rural Kenya. Dr. Aw is Co-Founder of Naweza which is a non profit organization focused on chronic disease prevention and mHealth in Africa. In 2020, he was appointed to the Ontario Joint Ministers Roundtable (Health and Treasury Board) on the COVID 19 Health Data Platform.
Dr. Aw is a graduate of the University of Ottawa School of Medicine (MD) and diplomate in occupational health and safety (DOHS) from McMaster University. He has acquired post-graduate training in international health and travel medicine in the U.K. (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), Uganda (U. of Makerere), Barbados (U. of West Indies) and U.S.A. He is a certificant of the core curriculum in occupational medicine from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, previously an American Board Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) and certified in Travel Health (CTH) by the International Society of Travel Medicine. Dr. Aw is interested in clinical research in the areas of preventive medicine.
